A Warm Drink for a Cold Night

I recently found out that I am quasi-lactose intolerant, so milk is off the menu, at least in terms of drinking it. This, of course, dampers my morning chocolate milk habit. I can still have cheese and some milk here and there, but generally I've been advised to limit my dairy intake.

In addition to chocolate milk, I love hot chocolate. I don't drink coffee and I only have tea once in a while. But I had grown used to having hot chocolate several nights a week, mostly during the colder months. So, now that its getting colder, I wanted a hot drink at night without caffeine and without milk.

I just finished reading a set of travel essays about Norway and came across references to hot berry juice drinks. The author mentioned Ligonberry, which is hard to find in West Michigan, so I substituted Cranberry juice. Pomegranate juice, or nearly any other fruit juice will work too. I use a low-sugar variety so as not to lapse into a sugar-coma or add yet another source of weight gain this time of year.

Here's my recipe for a pleasing, healthy, hot drink for cold evenings:

Low-sugar cranberry juice, amount determined by how many you are serving.
Cinnamon sticks for each mug.
3-4 drops of ginger juice per serving.

Heat the cranberry juice in a sauce pan. Serve warm, not overly hot. Place the ginger juice in your mug and then stir with the Cinnamon stick.

Greg,

The body is an amazing vehicle. It adapts well to it's surroundings.  Here is a little story from a stubborn person....me.

Long story short, I found I was having a bad reaction to scallops.  Being the stubborn person I am, decided that would not be allergic to them.  So I basically went of a scallop diet for two weeks (not everyday mind you, but at least every 3rd day or so). It was rough going the first couple days, but since I have had zero problems with scallops.

Just a story for you to enjoy.  Not suggesting anything...well..

Have a great day!

Sounds like a great hot drink! How do you get the ginger juice?

Editors Note: You can try your local grocery store in the produce section, or a health food store, or gourmet food store. If all fails, you can grate some ginger and add it to the drink or strain the warm juice over the grated ginger.

Greg:

I too had trouble with being lactose intolerant.  So bad that I could not even have a milk chocolate candy bar.  Then I started using the Nutrilite digestive enzyme capsules.  Made an amazing change in my lfe.  That was 8 or 9 years ago.  Now I don't even have to take them anymore, enless I get a little upset stomach.  I enjoy all kinds of milk products every day now.  Hope they work for you.  Great product!!

Greg,

Maybe you can try soy chocolate milk as a substitute for the hot chocolate fix?

EDITORS NOTE: I have, and I like it. I use Silk Chocolate soy milk for drinking and Miejer Organic Vanilla soy milk for cereal and cooking. Thanks for the note!

Have you heated up the XS Teaberry Blast and the new peach?  How about heating up the Simply Nutrilite Juices? I have never thought of having warm juice before, but I think I'll give it at try.  It could be a great winter marketing idea.  I do know IBO's who drink the Teaberry Blast as their hot tea in the morning.

Editors Note: Not sure how XS would taste warmed up, especially with the carbonation, but I am sure the juices would taste great. Good idea! --G
